How Employers Can Receive Up to £2,000 and Save Thousands on Recruitment
If you’re thinking about recruiting new staff this year, there’s never been a better time to consider an apprentice.
From 1 October 2026, the Government is introducing a new financial incentive designed to encourage more employers to recruit young apprentices. Combined with fully funded training and National Insurance savings, businesses could save thousands of pounds whilst developing skilled employees for the future.
Whether you’re a small business looking to grow or an established organisation struggling to recruit, here’s everything you need to know.
What Are the New Apprenticeship Incentives?
The Government has announced that eligible non-levy paying employers will be able to receive up to £2,000 when recruiting a new apprentice aged 16–24 who starts their apprenticeship from 1 October 2026, subject to the published eligibility criteria.
The funding is designed to help employers cover some of the initial costs associated with recruitment, including:
• Uniforms and equipment
• Induction and onboarding
• Initial supervision and mentoring
• Training support
• Recruitment costs
For many SMEs, this removes one of the biggest barriers to employing apprentices.
Who Can Claim the £2,000 Apprenticeship Incentive?
The incentive is aimed at small and medium-sized employers who do not pay the Apprenticeship Levy. To qualify, employers must meet the Government’s eligibility criteria, including recruiting an apprentice aged between 16 and 24 who is new to the business and begins their apprenticeship on or after 1 October 2026.
If you’re unsure whether your organisation qualifies, Future Training can help you check your eligibility.
How Much Can Employers Save?
The £2,000 incentive is only one part of the financial support available. Many eligible employers can also benefit from:
• 100% Government-funded apprenticeship training for eligible apprentices.
• No employer National Insurance contributions for eligible apprentices under 25, where the relevant earnings conditions are met.
• Existing £1,000 incentive payments for eligible younger apprentices or those with additional support needs, where applicable.
When these savings are combined, apprenticeships often become one of the most cost-effective ways to recruit and develop new employees.
Why More Employers Are Choosing Apprenticeships
Recruitment has become increasingly challenging across many industries. Whether you work in childcare, education, leisure, hospitality, business administration or sport, finding experienced staff can be difficult and expensive.
Apprenticeships offer employers the opportunity to:
• Recruit motivated individuals with the right attitude.
• Train staff specifically for your business.
• Develop future supervisors and managers.
• Improve staff retention.
• Reduce recruitment costs.
• Build a long-term talent pipeline.
Rather than competing for experienced employees, businesses can invest in developing their own future workforce.
Apprenticeships Are an Investment, Not a Cost
Many employers initially focus on the financial incentives.
Whilst these are certainly attractive, the real value comes from developing loyal, skilled employees who understand your business from day one. Research consistently shows that apprentices often remain with their employer after completing their programme, helping businesses reduce staff turnover and create stronger teams.
The financial incentive helps you get started—but the long-term benefits can last for years.
