APPRENTICESHIP LEVY FAQ’S
The Apprenticeship Levy is a UK government initiative introduced in April 2017. It is a tax on employers with an annual pay bill over £3 million, set at 0.5% of their total payroll. The funds collected are used to support apprenticeship train ing across various sectors.
Any UK employer with an annual pay bill of more than £3 million is required to pay the levy. This includes businesses in both the public and private sectors.
The levy is collected through the Pay As You Earn (PAYE) process, and it is automatically deducted from an employer’s payroll. The funds are then credited to the employer’s Digital Apprenticeship Service (DAS) account and must be used within 24 months of being received.
Employers can use their levy funds to pay for apprenticeship training and assessment for their employees. This can include training for both new recruits and existing staff, as long as the training provider is approved by the DFE.
